How important is the University–Industry collaboration for Indian higher education?

The University–Industry collaboration holds immense importance for the Indian education, especially in the university level. We need to amalgamate industrial knowledge with academics so as to create a successful model for education. Jamia Hamdard has already created niche areas where we are actively working with industries on the campus. We have incubator centres on our campus that have been developed in association with large industries. For example, in pharmaceutical sector, the largest name today is Ranbaxy and we have its centre on our campus, which is focused on clinical research and clinical settings. Presently clinical education is of prime importance to us and hence, we are working very closely with industry.

The students are not only reading books but they are practically doing the clinical research on subjects or patients on the campus itself. That is a very successful model for us and based on that model we are enlarging our reach with other industries. We have just signed an agreement with Hilleman Laboratories and by September 2011, the lab will become functional in our campus. They have invested around Rs 30 crore and that will be an example of industry-academia practical interaction on the campus. Such partnerships will not only benefit the students but also positively affect the next generation. Thus, University-Industry collaboration is the future of the Indian higher education.
