CAT (I.I.M)

Eligibility

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA)categories], awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case the candidates are awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades/CGPA to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained the bachelor's degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100.

Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. IIMs may verify eligibility at various stages of the selection process, the details of which are provided at Selection Process of IIMs.

CAT Exams: Development and Scoring

Development :
The CAT test development process was conducted in alignment with the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. The exam was designed with three sections: (1) Verbal Ability, (2) Quantitative Ability, and (3) Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. These three sections are consistent with the knowledge domains historically assessed by the IIM and are also aligned with the content areas covered in equivalent global admission examinations that measure performance along similar scales.

Content of the examination was developed and confirmed by individuals with high levels of expertise in each of three content domains (Verbal, Quantitative, and Data Interpretation). Post-administration analysis was conducted by credentialed psychometricians to confirm the validity of the examination scores and to ensure that every candidates was provided a fair and equal opportunity to display their knowledge.

Scoring :

Prometric employed an industry-standard, psychometrically-sound approach to the scoring process for all IIM candidates. The three-step process is outlined here and is supported by the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing and the ETS Standards for Quality and Fairness.

Step 1: Raw Score is Calculated
Your raw scores are calculated for each section based on the number of questions you answered correctly, incorrectly, or that you omitted.

Correct Answer Incorrect Answer Omitted
+3 points for questions you answered correctly -1 point subtracted for questions you answered incorrectly 0 points subtracted for questions you did not answer

This scoring methodology ensures that candidates are only awarded points for what they know. Candidates are not awarded inappropriate points for random guessing. This is a standard process in the testing industry and is a methodology employed in scoring similar admissions tests such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Step 2: Raw Score is “Equated”

Equating is a statistical process used to adjust scores on two or more alternate forms of an assessment so that the scores may be used interchangeably. Industry standard processes were used for equating, such as those outlined within the ETS Standards for Quality and Fairness.

Step3: Equated Raw Score is “Scaled”

In order to ensure appropriate interpretation of an equated raw score, the scores must be placed on a common scale or metric. A linear transformation was used for this scaling process, which is an industry standard practice (Kolen & Brennan, 2004).

The IIM scaling model is as follows:

Section Scores = (Mean of 40 and Standard deviation of 24) 0-150
Total Exam Score = (Summation of three section scores) 0-450

Four scaled scores are presented for each candidate: an overall scaled score and three separate scaled scores for each section. As the three sections evaluate three distinct sets of knowledge and skills, scores do not correlate across sections. A high score in one section does not guarantee a high score in another section. Percentile rankings are provided for each individual section as well as for the overall exam score.

Banking Service Examination

Banking is one of the most rewarding sectors in
the country. It assures well-paid, secure and satisfying career prospects. Openings are available at various levels, from Bank Clerical to Probationary Officers (PO).

In 1978 Banking Services Recruitment Boards (BSRBs) were established to have a uniform standard & eligibility criteria for recruitment of personnel to Nationalised Banks. There were 15 BSRBs covering one or more states & they were assigned to recruit both officers & clerks. However Central Recruitment Board of the State Bank of India undertook recruitment of officers for the State Bank group on the all India level separately.

After dissolution of BSRB's, banks are now advertising directly for their vacancies. Now IBPS conducts and rates the written examination (comprising objective and descriptive parts) on behalf of banks. The banks usually prefer to have for interviews anything from 3 to 4 times the number of vacancies advertised, and then make the final selection.
Indian Banking Sector
Banking Segment in India functions under the umbrella of Reserve Bank of India - the regulatory, central bank. This segment broadly consists of: Commercial Banks and Co-Operative Banks. The commercial banking structure in India consists of: Scheduled Commercial Banks and Unscheduled Banks. The Scheduled Commercial Bank category can be broadly divided into – Public Sector, Private Sector and Foreign Banks. Public sector banks have either the Government of India or Reserve Bank of India as the majority shareholder. This segment comprises of State Bank of India (SBI) and its subsidiaries, and Other Nationalised Banks. The co-operative banking structure in India is divided into following main 5 categories: 1. Primary Urban Co-op Banks 2. Primary Agricultural Credit Societies. 3. District Central Co-op Banks 4. State Co-operative Banks.5. Land Development Banks.

Railways Examination

The Indian railways are broadly divided and sub-divided into zones, divisions and departments, each controlling a particular function. Every division has a certain number of technical and non-technical departments, which form the base structure on which the railways function. Technical departments include civil, technical and mechanical engineering, signalling and telecom, and several others dealing with similar disciplines, while the non-technical departments include general services such as accounts, personnel management, Railway protection Force (RPF) or security and traffic services, among others. Each department has staff at various levels. The highest are the Group A officers, while the lowest in rank are the Group D staff members.

Group A

² UPSC - Group A officers are recruited by UPSC
² Civil Service Examination - Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) and the Indian Railways Accounts Service (IRAS)
² Combined Engineering Service - Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) and Indian Railway Store Service (IRSS)
Group B
Group B officers are directly promoted from Group C.
Group C
Group C officers are recruited through the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). The 19 Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have been functioning as prime recruiting agencies for all Zonal Railways, Production Units and other extra Zonal units of the Indian Railways. Each Railway Recruitment Board is catering to the recruitment needs of the specified jurisdiction on the Railways. However, there is no regional or linguistic distinction for recruitment to any post as far as eligibility of the candidates is concerned. Any citizen of India fulfilling the recruitment criteria can compete for any post without any regional or linguistic limitations. The Group C posts include assistant station masters, drivers, motormen, guards, signal and mechanical inspectors. Here again, staff are divided into technical and non-technical staff.

Hiring prospects strongest in IT: Survey

NEW YORK: Reflecting the better labor market conditions, a significant number of companies in the US plan to recruit new personnel during the remaining part of 2011, with customer service and the IT industry expected to offer the strongest hiring prospects, says a survey.

According to a study by job portal Career Builder, 47 per cent of employers surveyed are planning to hire employees in the July to December period of this year, up from 41 per cent in 2010 during the same period.

"Last year, certain sectors or departments in companies were producing jobs. This year, the US is seeing job creation in all industries, functions and company sizes," CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson said.

Ferguson further said,"hiring activity will sustain and improve in the months to come with a diverse mix of jobs. While higher energy prices, debt, inflation and other factors may deter a significant acceleration in hiring, employers have encouraging news for the millions of Americans who are looking for jobs".

Recruitment activity would increase by 23 per cent in Customer Service, followed by 21 per cent in Information Technology (IT) and 20 per cent in Sales.

Besides, hiring activity would be at good pace in sectors such as Administrative (15 per cent), Business Development (11 per cent), Accounting/Finance (10 per cent) and Marketing (9 per cent).

Interestingly, half of the employers surveyed said there is a shortage of skills within their organization, up from 48 per cent last year. The biggest shortages were in the areas of IT, Customer Service and Communications.

Additionally, more than one-third (36 per cent) reported they have positions for which they could not find qualified candidates, up from 32 per cent last year, the survey noted.

Notably, more job openings translate into more competition for highly skilled workers. Employers (35 per cent) are concerned that top performers will look for job opportunities outside of their organization as the economy improves.

In the July-September quarter, 26 per cent of respondent plan to increase their headcount and eight per cent expect to downsize staff. Another, 61 per cent anticipate no change, while 5 per cent are undecided on the issue.

In contrast, 29 per cent of employers surveyed had added new personnel in the April-June quarter of 2011, up from 24 per cent last year.

Further, 11 per cent decreased headcount, while 59 per cent made no change in staff levels and one per cent were unsure.

The survey was conducted within the US by Harris Interactive on behalf of Career Builder, among 2,662 hiring managers between May and June.

IIPM: Mocking at Quality of Indian Higher Education?

IIPM and Arindam Chaudhuri have been synonymous with advertisements shouting "Dare to think beyond the IIMs!" (Here is Hoot's analysis on IIPM's advertisements). It took audacity (often to the limit of brashness) and entrepreneurial grit to equate oneself with big brands like IIMs. IIPM enrolls more than 5000 students across 8 campuses with more than 400 faculty members.

So, what's the issue? The issue is better understood if you see the advertisements of IIPM like below. What's the brand "promise" to a prospective student? They are most likely to see "MBA/BBA/EMBA" along with major brands like Cornell and Stern.

However, FAQs on IIPM website mentions:
"1. Does AICTE/UGC [Indian regulatory bodies] recognize IIPMs programme in planning and entrepreneurship?
No. IIPM has never sought recognition from any statutory bodies and is proud of its world class course contents. Students bothered about statutory recognition of IIPMs programmes need not apply to IIPM....
2. Does IIPM award an MBA/BBA degree?
No. In India degrees can be awarded only by universities and therefore just like the IIMs, even IIPM (which is not an university) does not offer an MBA/BBA degree."
This disconnect and misrepresentation comes at a huge price to students (In fact, someone has started a website called IIPM is a scam!). IIPM's approach also made some leading brands like Stanford to issue a letter about IIPM's false claims. IIPM is also a classic case of how slow and toothless higher education quality assurance system in India is. Based on complaints, UGC expressed concerns in 2005 and then again in 2010, however, IIPM continues to grow using it's tried and tested method of advertising and ignoring regulation.

2005
"The University Grants Commission is not happy with the Indian Institute of Planning and Management offering an MBA degree. UGC says no institute in the country can offer a degree course without its approval and IIPM does not have its go ahead.
Advertisements by IIPM in leading dailies across the country have been promising students a degree in MBA. But the fine print in the ad says the institute does not come under the purview of the UGC."
2010
"...University Grants Commission (UGC) made it clear that the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), run by Arindam Chaudhuri, is not recognised by the government or any of India’s higher education bodies"

More recently, Siddhartha Deb wrote an incisive article “Sweet Smell of Success: How Arindam Chaudhuri Made a Fortune Off the Aspirations—and Insecurities—of India’s Middle Classes.”  (I can't even provide the link to the article as court has ordered to remove the article). Of course, Dean Chaudhuri did not like it and sued the author, magazine and Google (yes, you read it right--Google) for defamation. Here is the press release by Caravan magazine which published Deb's article and has been sued by IIPM.

Interestingly, there are many more unrecognized institutions in India. According to a government response, AICTE and UGC have received 101 and 23 complaints respectively about alleged malpractices. We still remember the fuss and attention Tri Valley scam in the US received , however, there are many Tri Valley's in India and nothing is being done. At least, in the case of TVU, it is now defunct, while Indian regulation is restricted to paperwork and rhetoric. In March 2010, "The Prohibition of Unfair Practices" bill was approved by the Cabinet, however it is yet to be approved by the Parliament.

IIPM's approach raises several questions about the profession and quality assurance of higher education in India:
  • Is IIPM misleading students or offering a unique choice?
  • Is Arindam Chauduri an inspiration or disgrace for education fraternity including faculty and entrepreneurs?
  • What does it say about Indian quality assurance environment? Why worry about foreign universities bill when one can always work-around it?
  • If you are a foreign university looking for collaborations in India, how do you distinguish between "recognized" and "unrecognized" institutions? What are the implications for your institutional brand?
  • How does one distinguish between institutions like ISB and IIPM when both are not recognized by AICTE? (ISB is ranked #12 in Financial Times). What brand risk a foreign institution is assuming in forging partnerships?

Rising popularity of Executive M.B.A. Programs in India

Management courses have always been a favorite choice amongst thousands of students and professionals. For many years, if somebody wanted to do an Indian graduate management course, he or she had to appear for competitive entrance exams. Since the competition was fierce, only 1 percent of the total applicants could achieve desired results. Those who failed to pass the entrance test chose to study abroad if they could, or simply picked another option. And, such choices apparently blocked their chances of coming back.
However, a change started taking shape when about ten years back one of the business schools in India opened another avenue in the city of Hyderabad with launching a midcareer M.B.A. program. It was something unique and could be completed over a span of one year only. The ratio of enrollment in this program also increased compared to 2001 from just 126 to 575. The program is well received by the candidates and as a result, the school is planning to build its second campus the coming year for over 200 candidates in Mohali, Punjab, one of the wealthiest states of India.
Today, a large number of top business schools in India are providing 1 year executive program in MBA. This course is specially meant for computer professionals and those who belong to technical backgrounds. It is useful for those who are interested in changing the course of their careers or want to assume new roles and responsibilities at the organizational level.
Institutions, which are providing such courses, feel that their students are as efficient as those who study two year M.B.A programs. Some employers do not agree with this, while alumni, teachers and placement cells are confident that recruiters will also accept this soon.
Some of the reputed institutions that run one year executive MBA programs can see increased demand in this sphere. The Noida campus of the Indian Institute of Management was mainly opened for this executive course only.
In the first three years, less than 50 enrollments were made for the executive programs, but it increased to 67 over a period of time. A credit for this is attributed to the facility of new residential building.
One of the students of the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies Bangalore was working as a computer software engineer. After the completion of his 1 year executive program, he joined HSBC in Bangalore. He got this opportunity when he was still studying. He said that earlier he was designing software programs for others to use and now, he himself is a user of such tools and methods. He is doing well in the business sphere. He added that many people are looking for this course nowadays.
Further, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad is also witnessing rising demand in its one year executive M.B.A. program. Institute’s director Samir K. Barua endorsing this fact said that the total demand for the program has shot up by 25 percent in 5 years. In fact, the popularity of this course is so vast that students with 10 years of professional experience are also enrolling in this course in the state of Gujarat.
Many feel that since a large number of students seeking admission to this course have considerable work experience, the program needs less communication hours than the two year MBA course.
Another reason behind the popularity of the executive programs is that the working professionals are not only able to learn more information but can also make its faster and effective use than those who pursue two-year program without any work experience. Along this line, director of the Xavier Labour Relations Institute Jamshedpur, E. Abraham expressed that midcareer professionals are not only able to introduce fresh ideas at the middle to senior levels, but also have the ability to perform from the very first day of their joining.
While all this sound promising, there are some human resources officials who feel that employers still prefer to recruit candidates from two year MBA programs and one year degree courses as well. They are of the opinion that students from two year management programs have more things to show and pressing two years of information into one year course results in weak content.
No doubt, these concerns hold valid points, but more such courses will be introduced in near future to satisfy the demands of Indian corporations. In recent times, many organizations have evolved and are creating great employment opportunities. This, in turn, is leading to a gap that should be filled up soon by several engineers.
Furthermore, there are some students who opine that the attitude towards one year program needs to be changed. Most people are interested in leading a campus life and hence, they fail to attach real value to these short-term courses. Those who have done short term programs feel that their prior work experience helps them to be a better student. They become more practical and less theoretical and can apply the newly gained knowledge in more effective way.
Echoing the same opinions, some students add that one year programs make them go-getter compared with two year courses. Marketing and strategy building activities become clearer to them.
There are some students who were doing great in their jobs, but somewhere down the line, they felt this urge to expand the base of their knowledge. They realized that many things need to be learnt even while doing a job and for this, one year programs are the great solutions.  Owing to this, many students opt for one-year M.B.A. program offered by the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow and other such reputed centers of learning.
At the end of these professional courses, these candidates either join big organizations at leading positions or opt for a trainee profile. Whatever be the choice, the end result is definitely pleasant because they are the ones who can strike a perfect balance between their practical and theoretical knowledge.
So, for all those who were thinking of doing executive program in MBA, but hesitated to make a final decision, it’s the right time to make a move.

Engineering makes life simple for us

Engineering talents help us lead a hassle-free, peaceful life. So, if you want to be a part of this, do choose this as the subject of your study!
In this fast-paced world of technology and gadgets, it is impossible for anyone of us to imagine our life without electronic gears, televisions, mobile phones, laptops, Ipods, and cameras. We are all, almost, technology savvy. We cannot think of doing anything without the help of machines. In fact, in their absence, we feel like lost species, left with no time for ourselves and daily grinds taking a toll on us. Isn’t it? But, thank god, we don’t ever have to undergo such painful phase because of electronic engineering, an engineering discipline that deals with technology.
It is the gift of this subject that such devices and systems are created which can make adequate use of electrical energy to assess, transfer and reserve information. Most often than not, the three engineering disciplines which are taken in the same spirit include electronic, electrical and communication engineering. At many places, students are offered a combined course in electronic and communication engineering.
According to Andrew Thangaraj, engineering is a vast area with sub-divisions like electronics, signal processing, VLSI, communications, power, machines, energy systems, controls and instrumentation. Students need to choose an area of specialization from the aforementioned options at both bachelor’s as well as master’s level. However, if there is any confusion regarding the choice, students can opt for internships in acclaimed institutions or companies to finally decide on the course of their specialization.
As per the employment opportunities are concerned, students really don’t need to worry about anything. Both public as well as private sectors are abuzz with plenty of options for engineering enthusiasts. You must be thinking – “what makes this course so popular?” Well, engineering is one of those few educational fields where students get to learn updated things and teachings are also need as well as demand based. Thus, it is clear from this that engineering is definitely a good option in terms of education and employment.
On the completion of electronic engineering course, candidates can look for options in sectors like electronics design automation, power industries, telecommunication, instrumentation and control, information technology, etc. However, this doesn’t imply that opportunities are restricted to these sectors only. Aside from these, any bright graduate can take a plunge in space technology, transport and entertainment industries as well. Initial pay packet may be somewhere around Rs 7 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
Those who want to gain expertise in this field can seek admissions in any of the top institutes mentioned below:
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
• National Institutes of Technology (NITs)
• Haldia Institute of Technology, Hatiberia
• Bhabha Institute of Technology, Kanpur

summer jobs

You may wish to have a job or an internship this summer. There are a lot of student summer jobs but in most cases they do not pay at all but allow you to gain experience within your major and looks really good on your resume. Many times the company that provided your student summer jobs will hire you once you graduate.

If you do find yourself with the summer free, why not take advantage of the long holiday and get work experience abroad by doing a summer internship? It could be you want to teach a favorite activity of yours (skiing or diving perhaps) or that you are looking for something a little less stressful – say fruit-picking or au-pairing in the Mediterranean. By working abroad, you’ll demonstrate your independence and want for adventure to your future employers and of course, you’ll be able to add some sort of language skills to your CV too (assuming you make an effort to communicate with the native people whilst abroad). Should your language skills already be highly developed, consider work in a hotel – reception jobs are often open during the summer months as the rise in tourism levels means there is often a high demand for staff – this is a great job of much responsibility so be sure to check it out!

Please bear in mind that it’s not absolutely essential that you go abroad to get international experience – how about teaching English in theIndia? Being a native speaker, you’re already qualified so all that’s left to do is find a school! If you already have a background in a second language, ideal. For example, you could employ the hindi you learnt at school to teach English to Spanish people in a language school in hindi, practicing your foreign language skills when explaining the English grammar yet still being able to go back to your comfortable family home during the evenings – certainly the best of both worlds!

No matter how you choose to invest your time during the summer, a summer job or summer internship, make sure it is benefiting you! Whether it is earning money or getting experience, the summer holidays and the time you have outside of class during the academic year is a lot and so be sure not to waste it!

Internships: How to find, What to agree on and What to expect?

The first thing you do in your internship process is to think about what kind of internship you are looking for. This is an important decision because you will learn a lot about the specific job that you are going to do. Do not just randomly take opportunities that are easy to arrange or have a nice destination. Your internship is one of the most important learning processes in your study, so think carefully about what kind of job you want to have in the future, and try to find an internship that is as similar as possible. This way you will develop many basic skills that will be a big advantage for you once you start looking for a job after graduation. Another thing that can happen is that you might find out that you do not like the kind of job as much as you thought. In this case you can think about working in the same sector in the future but maybe in a different department or other subsector. If you do not like the sector at all, then at least you discovered this before you start working, and while you are finishing your studies you can start looking around for other possibilities and read extra books about other (sub) sectors that you are interested in.
How to find an internship?

Once you know what kind of internship you want you can start looking for opportunities. Another important decision that you have to make is whether you want to do an internship in your own country or not. If you are interested in learning new languages or do you want to improve your language skills, it will be highly recommendable to do your internship in another country. It has also other benefits because you will learn more about other cultures. When you look for an internship you can do it yourself or book a company to do this for you. There are many different companies that are willing to help you finding your internship, but this way will not be cheap. An advantage about this is that you get opportunities more easily and that you do not get involved with complicated contracts. But when you decide to look for an internship yourself you will learn a lot from the process, you will get involved with paperwork and will improve your organizing and time management skills. In both cases you will have to write a good motivation letter with a C.V., if you do not have a letter of motivation yet, I would suggest you to take a look at the C.V. section on this website.
What to agree on?

If you found the perfect internship, there is still a long way to go because now you have to sign contracts and do other paperwork. In many cases your school helps you with making a contract because they have a standard contract. But sometimes the company also has its own contract or you have to make one. When you are not working with the standard school contract, there are many things that you have to pay attention to:

* Are the dates correct? Keep in mind that 4 weeks are not the same as 1 month.
* Did the company mention all your payments and rewards on the contract?
* In case you get extra benefits like a place to live or transport compensation, then check if this is mentioned in your contract.
* Read the rules of the company carefully; is there anything that you do not agree with?
* Also do not forget to include a part that your supervisor has to assess your work. This is always helpful for your internship report.
* Check if you have the right to have free days, and if this is included in the contract.
* Check your working hours: are they correct and do they match the requirements of your school?
* Is the contract signed by all three parties (the school, your company and by yourself)
* Are your main working activities included in the contract?
* Think about the way that they described your working activities, are they concrete enough or are they very vague (watch out that they do not make you do things that are not related with your studies)?
* Always make spare copies of every contract

What to expect

An important thing that will prevent you from any kind of disappointment during your internship is that you know what you should expect. Be realistic about the situation, internships can, and should be a lot of fun, but your main reason that you are doing an internship is to learn. Always research the company a bit before you start working, and read your contract to see what kind of working activities you will have.

2. Switch off your cell phone before an interview starts

3. Eye contact conveys confidence

4. Introduce yourself clearly with your first and last name

5. Smile at appropriate times

6. Take time to understand the question and then answer it. It is not a question of how fast you answer but how well you answer

At the end of the interview

Generally, the panel will indicate the end of the interview by asking: Do you have any questions for us? Use this opportunity to ask intelligent and relevant questions, to summarize your skills & experience related to the job and indicate your interest in the job.

Conclusion
It is essential to be confident in an interview. If you have practiced your answers and done your homework, most of the questions can be answered without difficulty. Ensure that you take the time to understand what they are looking for by asking the question. Remember to study the relevant topics before the interview. If you have an interview for an equity research position, know what has been driving the markets, who are the major players, etc. If you have an interview for a marketing position in a FMCG company know what has been the recent trend, what new products have been launched recently, etc.

Keep in mind why you want to go into the industry (Telecom, Banking, Auto, etc.), why you are interested in the job and the company. Make sure you have a good grasp of the basic concepts and convince your interviewer that you have the capability and interest to learn the more complex aspects of the job.

Finally, ensure that you dress and act professionally. Show up on time and make eye contact throughout the interview. All the Best!
